The Buffalo Bills are still waiting to learn the fate of cornerback Leodis McKelvin, but they learned Monday another defender is lost for the season.
As for McKelvin, Marrone said it won't be known until later this week whether he will miss any time. McKelvin suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter Sunday and missed the rest of the game.
The Bills suffered mightily with McKelvin sidelines and Stephon Gilmore missing his third game with a broken hand. Justin Rogers was repeatedly beaten for long touchdowns Sunday, as Jets quarterback Geno Smith posted his first career 300-yard game against the Bills. Aaron Williams was also moved from safety to cornerback to help fill the gap, as the Bills were without their top three cover guys (Ron Brooks also sat out the game). Safety Jairus Byrd also missed his third straight game with plantar fasciitis.
"Obviously, Justin had a very tough game, we all know that," Marrone said. "For us, it's kind of 'next man up' and high expectations. It's an opportunity. Let's go out there and play. We have to see what we have to do as coaches from a schematic standpoint to see when and where to help those guys and give them some help."
Where the Bills should not seek help is defensive line. Tackle Marcell Dareus should be OK for Week Four at home against Baltimore after being carted off the field Sunday due to an ankle injury. Mario Williams (ankle) and C.J. Spiller (thigh) are also expected to play Sunday. Spiller, who sat out much of the second half Sunday, said he tried to play after hurting his leg but was slowed down too greatly and took himself out. And reserve cornerbacks Brandon Burton and Johnny Adams will get looks at practice this week to see if they're caught up enough to play; both were signed after the end of training camp.
