After an offseason-long holdout, followed by a sudden announcement of injury, Jairus Byrd seems to be recovering well and is working toward his first action this season.
“I think every day there’s progress,” Bills head coach Doug Marrone told Buffalobills.com. ”It’s just a matter of time now to when it gets to that point where he’s going to be able to go out there. So I think we’re getting closer and closer. He’s working extremely hard. I’m really proud of the way he’s working with the younger players and the veteran players back there. Jairus is doing an excellent job. It’s like having an extra coach and I told him he’s too young to coach and we want to get him on the field.”
Byrd is rumored to be unhappy with the organization after he was unable to reach a lengthy contract extension with the club. However, the Bills have expressed a deep desire to have him in their lineup for the long haul.
Buffalo's defense, however, hasn't struggled as much as some have anticipated in Byrd's absence. Buffalo has forced two interceptions this season, as well as a fumble recovery for a touchdown. It also helps to have Mario Williams back to his Houston form, as he had 4.5 sacks last week against the Panthers. Buffalo as a whole notched nine sacks on the season. The Bills have also kept opponents to 23 points in both of their contests.
While the defense continues to impress, Byrd is looking toward returning to the lineup and says it could be soon.
“It feels pretty good. It’s coming along,” Byrd told Buffalobills.com. “It’s just a process that just takes some time. It’s coming along. I’m encouraged. I don’t know. It’s literally day to day. I’m coming in day to day getting treatment and each night just doing the things they tell me to do to get it right. I’m encouraged by the progress."
