The most painstaking point of the preseason is among fans as week four of the preseason will be in full-swing tonight when the Buffalo Bills host the Detroit Lions.
With this being the final preseason game, starters are expected to see minimal, if any, action, while bubble players compete like it's the Super Bowl in an attempt to earn a spot on the roster. Fans may be as disinterested as they possibly can be in the finale, as they ache and crave for the regular season to begin. However, the game must be played, and there are a few notes worth mentioning.
As previously, mentioned, starters are likely to see very limited action. Stevie Johnson, however, views the finale as very important and is eager to get on the field and be sharp in his time in the game.
“These games are important,” Johnson told Buffalobills.com. “This is how I got on the team, playing in this fourth preseason game. The plays I do get in, hopefully no mental errors, don’t get injured of course, and just support my teammates.”
CJ Spiller will not attend the game as he has a family matter to attend to. Jairus Byrd is also unlikely to see action.
With Buffalo's quarterback position depleted, newcomers Matt Leinart and Thad Lewis will both see extensive action in the finale.
“I want to make sure with Kevin (Kolb’s) situation being not a short term situation, I want to see both of those guys,” Doug Marrone told Buffalobills.com. “That’s my goal. I have not made a decision on which one is going to play first.”
Staying on the topic of injuries, the one sustained by Stephon Gilmore will hurt the Bills undoubtedly, but they will still need to find a suitable replacement for the first six to eight weeks of the season. Crezdon Butler and Justin Rogers are front-runners for that position, as Chris Brown reports. It's unlikely that either one will have the impact that Gilmore could have, but both are expected to see plenty of action so the coaching staff can make proper evaluations.
Yes, the fourth preseason game is a throw-away game for fans. But for the players involved, it could be a very important game. Tonight's game between the Bills and Lions will be blacked out locally due to the blackout rule.
