The Bills were already without EJ Manuel on Saturday when Kevin Kolb went down during the first quarter against the Washington Redskins. he took a knee to the head and won't play beyond Thursday's preseason finale. His status beyond that is unknown, as is that of Manuel, who is also out Thursday.
So, to back up rookie Jeff Tuel, the Bills signed Leinart, who was not in a training camp this summer. The former first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals last took a snap in 2012 with the Oakland Raiders in two relief appearances. He has 15 career touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
Lewis was acquired via trade from the Detroit Lions. He started one game last year for the Cleveland Browns, throwing one touchdown and one interception in a loss. That was his only NFL action in three seasons.
Should Manuel or Kolb not be ready of the regular season, Leinart and/or Lewis might or might not stay on the roster as the third quarterback. But the addition of both Sunday signals a greater concern by Bills brass about the incumbents' health than originally indicated, especially in the case of Manuel.
