Paul Pierce might be wearing a jersey with "The Truth" on the back when the Brooklyn Nets take on the Miami Heat this season. It has been reported that the NBA is looking into Nets and Heat players wearing nicknames on the backs of their jerseys when the teams face off this season. With Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce on the Nets and Lebron James and Dwyane Wade on the heat, there's plenty of fodder for good nicknames.
The Brooklyn Nets and the Miami Heat are the only teams involved in the plan so far. There are plenty of nicknames in that bunch, with some players being forced to choose between multiple nicknames. It's not a bad way to break up the grind of an 82-game season for one night. Many players have been supportive of the idea, but others have pulled back and aren't on board.
The matchup will be a high-profile one as the Nets and Heat are expected to be two of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference this season. That means it will likely be a nationally televised game that has the attention of the country as the NBA debuts nickname jerseys. Depending on the success of the idea it could eventually grow to include more teams.
It's also a great marketing ploy for the NBA. Jersey sales go up when a team introduces a new uniform, and Kobe Bryant sparked an uptick in his own jersey being purchased when he changed his number. Now, fans will be looking to scoop up jerseys with "The Truth," "The Big Ticket," "King James, and "Jesus Shuttlesworth" on the back. Of course, any logical fan would scoop up some sweet apparel from LogoWear's Brooklyn BB Collection instead of jumping on the nickname jerseys bandwagon.
There have been some issues. Some players have run into copyright issues when selecting their nickname (Shane Battier wanted to use Batman) and Kendall Marshall of the Phoenix Suns openly spoke out against the idea by saying that it puts more focus on the individual instead of the team.
