Teams across Europe are starting to prepare for FIBA Eurobasket by playing “friendlies” against other countries. Two members of the Brooklyn Nets have been competing in these games and have gotten off to two very different starts.
Mirza Teletovic was expected to be one of the stars of FIBA Eurobasket after leading Bosnia to a very successful tournament run in the qualifying rounds last summer. Teletovic has certainly been living up to the hype over the past few weeks, especially in a tournament in Germany this weekend. Teletovic scored atleast 20 points in each of the games. In the first game against the host country Germany, Teletovic went off for 26 points and 9 rebounds. The following day he scored 27 points and grabbed 11 boards against Greece, a team that is considered one of the best in all of Europe. He was extremely efficient scoring the ball, shooting 10-13 from the field and 7-10 from deep. Teletovic followed up those performances with a 21 point game against Macedonia. Teletovic was the leading scorer in the tournament, averaging 24.7 points over the three games.
The Nets also own the rights to Bojan Bogdanovic who is competing in “friendlies” to prepare for Eurobasket with his Croatian teammates. Unfortunately, Bogdanovic has not had quite the success that Teletovic has had to this point. The Croatian team was in Istanbul this weekend but Bogdanovic barely showed up. He scored just 17 points in 3 games, including a 1 point performance against Turkey on Saturday.
Earlier this summer Bogdanovic was expected to be a key contributor to the Nets team this season before he decided to stay in Europe for another year. The Nets should be thanking their lucky stars as Bogdanovic has struggled against sub-par NBA talent and instead got former All-Star Andrei Kirilenko to fill the spot in their rotation.
On the flip side, if Teletovic can keep this play up during the NBA regular season, coach Jason Kidd will have no choice but to give him significant minutes.
