Reigning WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin will be in attendance at The Ring 10 Veteran Boxing Foundation of New York's 3rd Annual Extravaganza on September 8, 2013. The event will be held at the beautiful Marina Del Rey in Throgs Neck, New York from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The purpose and goal of this non-profit foundation is to see to the welfare of boxers who have fallen on hard times and provide support where the need is greatest.
A Chicago-born Brooklyn resident, Quillin (29-0, 21 KO's) rose from extreme poverty and represents those who are struggling. He once slept on the floor of his friend's apartment in Manhattan while working three jobs to keep his dream of becoming a world champion alive. Through hard work and determination, that dream became a reality when he defeated Hassan N'Dam for the WBO middleweight title in October 2012 in front of his adopted hometown at the Barclays Center.
"Boxing is the only sport that I know of that people really relate to you in life. We fight through things and we struggle through things and we have to keep getting up," Quillin said in an interview with RingTV.com earlier this month.
He now joins the fight for struggling fellow fighters in need at the Ring 10 Annual Extravaganza. Other celebrity guests expected to be in attendance will be former champions Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, Livingstone Bramble, Iran "The Blade" Barkley, Calvin Grove, Marlon "Magic Man" Starling, Mark Beland and Aaron "Superman" Davis, former contenders John Duddy and Larry Barnes, actor Danny Aiello and many more. HBO's Harold Lederman will once again host the event.
Ring 10 will be introducing two new honors this year, with Lederman being issued the first "Ring 10 Bert Sugar Award" to acknowledge his vast knowledge of boxing history and former referee Tony Perez with the "Jose Torres Renaissance Man Award". Star Boxing CEO Joe DeGuardia will receive the "Ring 10 SALDA" (Steve Acunto Lifetime Dedication Award) and the 2013 "Arthur Mercante Award will be awarded posthumously to Referee Wayne Kelly.
In memory of some of the Bronx fighters who impacted the sport, this year's event will be dedicated to The "Boxing Belloise Brothers" – Steve, Mike and Sal Belloise – and Harry Balsamo, "The Belting Brakeman".
Tickets are now on sale for $135 and includes a complete brunch with cocktail hour followed by dinner and dessert with top shelf open bar. There will also be a silent auction of various boxing memorabilia.
All profits from this charity event will go to boxers in need, including former champions Wilfred Benitez and Gerald McClellan whom Ring 10 supports with monthly payments for food, medication and other necessities.
