The Boston Red Sox are cutting ties with A.J. Pierzynski. The veteran catcher has been designated for assignment and will be replaced on the roster by top catching prospect Christian Vazquez.

Pierzynski signed a 1-year, $8.25 million deal to join the Red Sox, but has been struggling at a below replacement level value this season. He hit .254/.286/.348 with 4 HRs and 31 RBI as Boston's primary catcher.

Manager John Farrell confirmed that Pierzynski is out and Vazquez will be behind the plate tonight when Boston faces the Chicago White Sox. Vazquez was hitting .279/.336/.385 for the Pawtucket Red Sox. He's unlikely to step in and solve the team's offensive woes, but he's considered a wizard behind the dish and should provide more value than Pierzynski did just with his defense.
