The rosters for this year's MLB All-Star game were announced last night, with Jon Lester being the only one to be selected from the Boston Red Sox. As the winning manager of last year's World Series, John Farrell had the honor of selecting the American League roster, but couldn't justify picking more than one of his own guys.
No David Ortiz, who has participated in the All-Star game in 9 of the past 10 years. No Dustin Pedroia, who has earned a spot in four of the past six. Koji Uehara wasn't picked either, despite being one of the league's top closers, but he's expected to be among the top choices to fill in as an injury replacement, if needed.
This will be Lester's third trip to the All-Star game. He currently ranks in the top 10 in the AL in Wins (9), ERA (2.73) and strikeouts (122). Adding another All-Star appearance to his resume will only increase the price tag for the impending free agent, which will increase the speculation that this may be Lester's last season in Boston as long as he remains unsigned.
None of the Red Sox players were voted in as starters for the game, but league rules indicate that each team must be represented by at least one player, which forced Farrell to pick one of his players. With many of the team's players having down seasons, there weren't many great options to choose from, which made the choice of Lester that much easier.
Here's the lineup for the AL team.
