The Red Sox send John Lackey to the hill to try and grab a 2-0 lead. Lackey last pitched in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series in Detroit against the Tigers and did not want to come out. He has finally reached the level of pitching in Boston that he had during his peak with the Anaheim Angels.
St. Louis counters with phenom Michael Wacha. In 13.2 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, Wacha did not allow an earned run, completely shutting the Dodgers down.
With news breaking late, here are a few things to keep in mind before Game 2:
–Carlos Beltran will play right field and bat second.
Beltran crashed into the bullpen wall in the second inning of Game 1 while he robbed David Ortiz of a grand slam. After being checked out at the hospital, x-rays and MRI's came back negative.
The Cardinals brain trust waited for him to take batting practice earlier Thursday before putting his name in the lineup.
–Clay Buchholz threw off flat ground before batting practice and Sox Manager John Farrell told reporters that Buchholz was still in line to start Game 4 Sunday in St. Louis.
This would be his only start of the Series.
Reporters observing Buchholz's session were not optimistic over Clay's body language.
A giant non-story.
–Sox fans should feel confident with Lackey on the mound tonight.
He wants the ball and wans to go the distance.
Unless he is extremely efficient, he will not go the full nine, but do not be surprised if he goes seven.
–After Adam Wainwright looked nervous in Game 1, the Cardinals need Wacha to pitch like he did against the Dodgers.
This is not a must win game for St. Louis, but if Boston torches Wacha as they did Wainwright early, confidence will become an issue as the series heads west.
–The game plan Boston used against Wainwright at the plate must be used on Wacha.
If they can drive his pitch count up early, it will go along way in the Sox winning.
–This will be Lackey's first start ever against the Cardinals.
