Temperatures will drop into the low-40s before all is said and done. Skies will be overcast, but rain will not be a factor. Game 1 gets played.
After a few days to recover from the League Championship Series, both the Red Sox and Cardinals are eager to play some ball.
First pitch is at 8:07 Eastern and here is what you need to know:
Buchholz will start a game in St. Louis, but it is unclear whether he would be able to start a decisive Game 7.
–Xander Bogaerts will start Wednesday at third base and bat seventh.
Jonny Gomes has earned the start in left field and David Ross will catch and bat ninth.
All these changes were hinted at before the series and Farrell has remained consistent in keeping with his lineup moves.
Bogaerts drew the higher batting order after a successful Game 6 of the ALCS against the Detroit Tigers after he battled back three times with a two-strike count to hit a double and walk twice.
–Injured Cardinals first-baseman Allen Craig will be the designated hitter.
Craig has been out of the lineup since September 4.
It is not clear whether he will physically be able to play first when the series shifts to St. Louis for the middle three games.
–This is the fourth time these two teams have met in the World Series.
St. Louis won in 1946 and 1967 in seven games and you all should remember what happened in 2004.
–Lester has pitched against St. Louis once in his career.
On June 22, 2008, Lester pitched into the eighth at Fenway against the Cardinals and drew no decision.
Boston won that game 5-3 in 13 innings, the last time these two teams met.
–Wainwright will be making his fourth start of the playoffs.
He has pitched at least seven innings in his first three starts and pitched a complete game win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 5 of their NL Divisional Series.
Cards manager Mike Matheny would like to keep him around 100 pitches, but will let him go 120 if needed.
–The Red Sox carry an eight-game World Series winning streak.
Their last loss was Game 7 of the 1986 World Series against the New York Mets.
–If you are lucky enough to be going to Fenway, bundle up.
More importantly, enjoy it. World Series games are few and far between.
