Weather will not be a factor as Game 1 of the American League Championship Series gets underway as the Boston Red Sox host the Detroit Tigers (TV/Radio/Twitter: FOX, WEEI-FM and ESPN Radio, @RedSox_101)
Lester will be going on full rest as he has not pitched since last Friday afternoon’s Game 1 of the AL Divisional Series against Tampa. In earning the win, Lester went into the eighth inning, scattering two runs on three hits, walking three and striking out seven.
Against the Tigers, Lester won both of his starts, but gave up five runs when they meant on June 21.
Lester has found the groove that made him the best left-handed pitcher in the game five years ago. Only once since September 1 has he failed to pitch into the seventh inning.
Lester gives Boston 21 outs, they win the game.
Sanchez surprisingly struggled in his lone playoff start.
In Game 3 of the Tigers ALDS win over Oakland in Detroit, Sanchez did not make it out of the fifth. He allowed six runs and eight hits in 4.1 innings.
When he is on, however, Sanchez is a strike out machine.
In 182 innings, Sanchez fanned 202. More importantly, he allowed nine home runs, down from 20 the previous two seasons. He is arguably the best No. 3 starter in the American League and the Red Sox will have their hands full if he pounds the strike zone.
Sanchez also has the advantage of Boston never facing him before. Saturday will be the first time he has ever pitched against the Red Sox in the season and a half he has been in the AL.
In their ALDS, Detroit’s pitchers gave up three runs in the three games in Oakland. In Detroit, however, they gave up 12 in two games.
Jhonny Peralta and old friend Victor Martinez come into the series with the hot bats. Martinez is extra-energized after his shouting match with Oakland reliever Grant Balfour in Game 3. Martinez and Peralta homered in Game 4.
The Red Sox made no changes to their roster between series while the Tigers made lefty specialist Phil Coke active.
Temperatures in the low-50s and no rain in the forecast. A trip to the World Series awaits the winner of the series.
