Some Brief Thoughts Following the Boston Celtics’ Loss to the Toronto Raptors

The Boston Celtics opened their season tonight against the Toronto Raptors, losing 93-87. Let's take a quick glance at the things that jumped out during the game.

The Celtics were dominated on the boards, which should not come as a surprise. However, when Tyler Hanbrough out rebounds Brandon Bass, Jeff Green, and Vitor Faverani combined (11 rebounds to 12 rebounds), it's not good. Overall, the Celtics had 33 rebounds compared to the 48 rebounds the Raptors pulled down. Offensive rebounds were equally as lob-sided, 19 to 7.

The lone rebounding bright spot was Kris Humphries who had 9 rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

Jeff Green

If this is the Jeff Green the Celtics can expect all year, then the future might be even brighten than just draft picks and assets. He shot 8-16 from the field, and most importantly, made it to the charity stripe nine times. That is a sign of aggression and getting to the rim. 25 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds is a very solid stat line. Here's hoping it continues.

Vitor Faverani, Courtney Lee, and Kelly Olynyk

While Faverani had a solid start to the game, he disappeared in the second half. The offense was flowing through him in the first quarter and he was getting good looks both from inside the paint and outside, even hitting a Kevin Garnett range jump shot.

Unfortunately, Faverani and Olynyk had horrible +/- ratings. Faverani had a -17, Olynyk had a -20, and Courtney Lee had a -16. Lee's confidence seems low and it does not seem to be getting any better any time soon. He had a bumpy preseason, and scoring 2 points in 14 minutes is not good. Olynyk managed 4 points, however, the rookie will have a lot of slack this season and the main goal will be to get him experience and keep him healthy.

Finishing the game

The Celtics trailed by 16 in the third quarter, then went on a great run to tie the game. The fourth quarter, where they scored 16 points, might be the rule rather than the exception. This team seems to have the ability to stay with teams for 36 minutes of basketball, but the last quarter will be difficult for the Celtics to win without a few players to depend on for scoring and defense.
