Opening Night Could Potentially Answer a Lot of Questions About the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics have completed their preseason, made their final cuts to the roster, and now have their sights set on Wednesday night’s season opener.

While this is only one single game of 82, it’s an interesting way to start the season. The Toronto Raptors are a team that has been mired in mediocrity for quite a while now. They are precisely what the Celtics do not want to become.

The opening game could tell us a lot about what the first 8 weeks without Rondo could look like (assuming a late December return for the Point guard). The Raptors and Celtics are evenly matched, although the Raptors probably have an overall edge.

How will this young team (and coach) react to the bright lights of regular season NBA basketball. Who will be starting? It seems that Brad Stevens might not start Jared Sullinger and instead utilize the length of Vitor Favetani’s length.

The question of starters is important given some of the slow stars. However, how will this team finish close games? They had plenty of practice this preseason, and finally won a close game in the final preseason test against the Brooklyn Nets B-Squad. With the dearth of talent in the bottom of the league the Celtics could end up in a bunch of close games that will help them grow and develop some crunch time confidence. That goes for the coach as well as the players.

So in the span of one game, the first game, fans will get to see the Celtics take on an opponent that they can compete with. It’s only one game, but it could tell us a lot.
