The Philadelphia 76ers announced that it’s prized rookie from Kentucky, Nerlens Noel, would most likely sit out the entire season. After tearing his ACL last season in college his draft stock plummeted.
His health does not seem in doubt at this point, his youth and modern medicine should have him ready to play at some point this season. The Sixers are taking it slow with the talented center.
Derrick Rose, who also suffered an ACL tear, has burst back onto the scene in the past two weeks. He looks strong and has made the Chicago Bulls’ expectations skyrocket. He sat out an entire season in order to ensure his health and dominance. So far, it's proving a good decision. He is dominating preseason, scoring a bunch of points and handing out assists. He's ready for primetime once again.
Can the decision by Derrick Rose last year and the one by the Sixers this season affect the how the Celtics handle Rajon Rondo? It’s very possible. Would it be smart to have Rondo sit for the whole season? Derrick Rose’s return has been one reason to sit on the star point guard for a year, allow him to get completely healthy, and then add him into the mix next season.
The Sixers have decided to sit Noel for an entire season to allow him to experience the NBA season, get his knee 100% healthy, and give the Sixers one more season to add talent through the draft.
The Celtics have a patient fan base right now. They are mentally prepared for a tough season. Now is the time to allow their team to go through growing pains and build slowly. Rushing Rondo back does not mesh with a patient outlook.
