The Boston Celtics close out their preseason schedule on Wednesday. Let's take a look at last week through the eyes of Celtics 101's Starting Five.
1) A quick look back
The Celtics went 0-3 this week, losing to the Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, and Minnesota Timberwolves. The games against the Nets and Raptors were close, once again ending in a Celtics loss. The Celtics have lost three games by two points or less this preseason. That is a bad omen for the rest of the year. Hopefully, the team can gain some experience and start learning to operate in close games. Brad Stevens will also need to generate a closing line-up that he can trust.
2) The road ahead
The Celtics will finish off their preseason schedule on Wednesday night against the Nets at TDGarden. Jason Terry will be there, Paul Pierce will not, and Kevin Garnett's presence is still in question. Here's hoping that Garnett waits until the regular season to receive the welcome he deserves.
3) Some surprising news
After it was announced that Bill Russell will be honored with a statue in Boston's city hall plaza, he was unfortunately arrested for carrying a gun while going through security in the Seattle-Tacoma Airport.
The statue is a wonderful thing for this city to do for it's greatest champion. In a time when Boston has been blessed with many fantastic athletes and championships this past decade, Bill Russell's contributions to the sport of Basketball and the city of Boston will no longer be over looked.
4) Trouble in paradise?
Gerald Wallace was outspoken following the Celtics' latest loss on Sunday night, saying his teammates were not playing with enough effort and were simply going through the motions.
Celtics 101 wrote about it on Monday, check it out for a more detailed look at the possible motivating factors behind Wallace's outburst.
Las Vegas released their yearly over/under totals for every NBA team. The Celtics listed at a 27.5 total for the 2013-14 season.
What are your thoughts on that over/under? Will the Celtics win more than 28 games this year? Will Rondo be the key to that win total?
The Celtics have until October 30 to get their starting lineup set. On Sunday against the Timberwolves the Celtics started Brandon Bass, Gerald Wallace, Courtney Lee, Avery Bradley, and Jared Sullinger.
Will Phil Pressey get his ankle healthy before the season opener? The starting lineup on Wednesday against the Nets could be a big hint as to who Stevens will have on the floor when the season starts next week.
The starters once again were in the minus in the +/- totals. The slow starts seem to be affecting everyone, no matter who Stevens tries out. Lee had a -16 rating against the Timberwolves.
Over the preseason Jordan Crawford is the only starter to have a +/- over zero in a loss. The only other game with any player above zero in +/- was their 111-81 win over the New Knicks (who were missing all their key players).
Starting fast will be pivotal for this team, as they do not have the offense to come from behind in games.
