Phil Pressey has impressed greatly over the course of the last two weeks. He has sparked a huge comeback against the New York Knicks, proved he can run the offense both in transition and in the half court, and he has earned the trust of his teammates.
His ankle injury which has left his status for the Minnesota Timberwolves game in question, should not hinder his chances at getting the starting spot before Rajon Rondo returns.
If Pressey is healthy, and performs well in the Brooklyn Nets game (assuming he misses the Wolves game on Sunday), he should earn the starting PG spot, if only to give him experience for when he becomes Rondo's official back-up. Courtney Lee's numbers have improved over the course of the preseason, and he is looking more comfortable, but he could be a more valuable player coming off the bench as a shooting guard and backing up Avery Bradley.
Pressey is exactly what the Celtics need right now. He is handing out assists, but not hindering his teammates from doing the same by dribbling the ball endlessly in the half court. He is also a high energy guy, and given the issue with the slow starts the Celtics have been having, it might be worth inserting some energy into the starting lineup instead of holding it for second unit. Gerald Wallace should be the guy to add energy to the second unit.
Obviously, the concern with starting both Pressey and Bradley is who will be the backup point guard? Can Jordan Crawford fill in? Maybe even Courtney Lee? That's the tough part in figuring out this rotation with one true point guard.
The next two games, or possibly one game, could make Brad Stevens' decision much easier. If Phil Pressey continues to run the offense smoothly he should be the starter, giving Stevens multiple options at the shooting guard and back-up point guard positions.
