Usually players are traded when teams decide they might need some new blood. They might be trying to improve or they are trying to rid themselves of a player that was not helping them achieve their goals.
However, other times players are traded in order to free up money or help move some money around, especially when there is a salary cap.
Enter Fab Melo and Donte Greene. They were traded for each other last month, and now they are both not employed by the team that traded for them. Fab Melo was released by the Memphis Grizzlies in late August. Today Donte Greene was waived by the Boston Celtics.
This is only a big deal because of the money it involved and that it helped the Celtics get below the luxury tax line, and more importantly, it helped them avoid the repeater tax, which is levied on teams that go above the salary cap in back-to-back years.
While some teams scoff at that extra tax, a team like the Celtics, that is predicted to win 26 games this year, should be nowhere near that luxury tax. Luckily, Donte Greene's non-guaranteed contract (the only one the Celtics had) helped them shed the proper payroll.
