Kevin Garnett is currently in China promoting his Anta brand shoe. Obviously, like every person impacted by the Celtics rebuild this summer, he was asked some questions regarding the Celtics, their future, and what he thinks his return to Boston will be like in January.
Obviously, Garnett is intensely intense (that might be the only way to describe him.). His loyalty runs deep, both in past and present relationships. The most telling part of the interview was KG saying that he has been in touch with a bunch of the Celtics since the trade. How long or meaningful all of those conversations were remains to be seen. However, KG's statement is pretty impressive:
All of them, Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee, I kind of shouted out to all of them and told them that the move was what it was, and that there wasn't any love lost between me and those guys. It's just business. Those guys will be forever with me. If they ever need me then I'm right there. I called (Jared Sullinger) to make sure he was alright, I heard he went through a little difficulty (so I wanted) to make sure he was okay.
Clearly, KG is close with a lot of his former teammates, and he wants to make sure they are all okay. While fans may gripe about players being too nice as opposed to the blood and guts battles between the Pistons and Lakers and Celtics of the 1980's, it is very cool to hear about KG reaching out to friends who might need a positive word of advice or just a phone call.
Sometimes, fans get caught up in the two hour stretches when athletes are on the field and they forget that athletes live their life, and have friends, and look out for their friends.
One player that KG always had a soft spot for was Rajon Rondo. As usual, he came up in conversation with KG:
I've been calling to make sure Rondo's okay, I've been checking on him because I know he's getting back for the season. But those are just things I do to people that I'm close to. I reach out to Courtney Lee and Avery Bradley every now and then to make sure they're okay.
When the season starts, KG will be in his own Brooklyn Nets world, focused on pick and roll defense and that smooth 19 foot jumper. KG's return to Boston will be emotional, and it's nice to know that he will be looking out for his former teammates for a little bit longer. He is a true leader, and one that will be missed dearly in Boston for the years to come.
