Jared Sullinger has spent the entire off-season talking a big game. He spoke of Celtic Pride and believed that tanking was not in the team's vocabulary. He was turning into a leader of this young bunch of non-tanking, up-starts ready to prove all the pundits wrong.
Then on Tuesday morning Sullinger turned himself in to Waltham Police after domestic violence-related charges were levied against him. Once again, the focus of a Boston sports team has been taken from the field and into the courtroom. Aaron Hernandez kicked off this trend, then Jared Remy (Jerry's son) continued it, and now Sulinger has found himself in the spotlight.
It takes a lot for a basketball team to make news in early September. Trades, injuries, and arrests seem to be the only ways to crack the stranglehold the Patriots and Red Sox have on the region this time of year.
Sullinger released a statement on Tuesday that stated:
I voluntarily reported to the Waltham police this morning to respond to charges against me. The experience was humbling and embarrassing for me. Yet I know that this situation has brought both sorrow and embarrassment to my girlfriend, my family, the Boston Celtics organization, my teammates, and my fans. To all of you, I apologize from the bottom of my heart.
In turn the Celtics released their own brief statement:
The Celtics were disappointed to learn of the allegations against Jared and are currently gathering more information on the situation, which we are taking very seriously. We will reserve further comment until such point that we have sufficient additional information.
It seems that everyone is taking this one day at a time, and that is the right way to handle it. Clearly, Sullinger made a mistake and has realized the error in his ways. He has spent his entire summer solidifying his place as a Celtics leader. His words were loud and proud, and now once again, Boston fans are reminded how quickly athletes can disappoint.
