Over the weekend it was reported that James Posey is being considered for Brad Steven's coaching staff on the Boston Celtics. The former Celtic, Posey spent one year in the green and white. He picked a wonderful year join the team, as he won an NBA Championship with the club.
Stevens' seems like he wants an ex-player to fill a spot on his staff. A smart move as Stevens tries to learn the ropes and Posey could be a good person to give him the ins and outs of the league and the little nuances that surround a team and the ebbs and flows of a season.
Posey would be a very nice fit in this position. Along with Kevin Garnett, he came across as a huge energy and chemistry guy on the 2008 squad. He greeted every starter with a handshake and a hug. Not a bro hug, but a long hug, usually with a motivational whisper in the ear too during the pre-game introductions.
After Posey left, the Celtics always lacked a player like him during their playoff runs. An energy guy, that could hit threes, play solid defense, and be completely unselfish. There were a few times when his name came up as a potential addition to the roster, unfortunately it never happened.
NBA-TV replayed game four of the 2008 NBA Finals when the Celtics came back from 24 points down. James Posey had a huge role to play in that game. He scored 18 points, including ten in the second quarter when all seemed lost. He never quit, never let up, and that type of attitude is what this coaching staff will have to instill in this young, defiant (in a good way), yet talented team this season. Guys like Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green may need more than just the voice of Brad Stevens egging them on. The voice of a former player will be vital considering the fact that Doc Rivers was that former player when he was coaching in Boston.
Jeff Green could end up learning the most from Posey, as Posey's personality and playing style was outgoing. Posey could teach Green a thing or two during post-practice shoot-arounds and 1v1 games. Green might be a player that requires a push to the next level. Posey might be just the guy to give it to him.
