Lets get the obvious out of the way first – there is no way that being without Rajon Rondo for two games helps the Boston Celtics. Rondo was suspended by the NBA for two games earlier today for his Wednesday night fight with Kris Humphries during the Celtics 95-83 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics are struggling mightily, showing stretches of sloppy play, indifferent effort and downright terrible defense in their stumble to an 8-7 record after 15 games. There is no way that losing Rondo for two games is going to help correct this. However, while it was a foolish decision by Rondo, Celtics101 is ok with it because someone on the team had to do something.
Go back to Wednesday night and try to remember the situation leading up to Rondo's ejection. The Celtics were getting embarrassed by Brooklyn, the latest of a number of terrible efforts at the TD Garden. They had already been destroyed by the Bucks, 76ers and Spurs on their home floor earlier in the year and the Nets were in the midst of handing them their worst beating yet. It was actually painful to watch. Nobody on the team seemed capable of doing anything right. The Nets weren't even shooting the ball well and yet had a 21 point lead midway through the second quarter. It was embarrassing. Then Humphries fouled Kevin Garnett while he was in mid air and Garnett fell awkwardly. There was no malicious intent to it but it looked bad with the way KG went down and he easily could have been injured. So Rondo went after Humphries. It was probably more out of frustration than anything else. Rondo has a habit of letting his emotions get the best of him (see Game 1 versus the Hawks last year), but Celtics101's reaction when it happened was "at least someone did something."
Sure it was actually a somewhat dumb play. The game was far from over and, though the Celtics had played terrible to that point, Rondo has to know that the team needed him on Wednesday and will sorely miss him while he is serving his suspension. He has a responsibility to his teammates to be out there. However given the way this season has gone so far, with the Celtics barely showing up multiple times, someone had to rock the boat. Someone had to do something. It would have been nice if it weren't Rondo as he's easily their most important player, but something had to happen. The team needed a spark. The Nets thought they could push the Celtics around because every single team has been able to do that this year. At least someone in a green jersey pushed back. It would have been better if Rondo had sparked the team with his play instead of by fighting, but at least it is something.
The Celtics play for most of this year has been either incompetent or worse; indifferent. Someone had to shake things up.
