On Thursday night the Bruins were shutout by the Colorado Avalanche for their first loss of the 2013 NHL season. The Avs were led by goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who stifled all 39 Bruins shots in his first appearance of the season.
The Bruins were 2-0-0 coming into the final tilt of their opening three-game homestand. Colorado has often been lauded as a youthful and talented on the offensive end, but tonight it was their defense that got the job done against the Bruins. The NHL season is long, and no team is capable of going unbeaten, but the Bruins were not at there best this evening.
1) The kill finally gives way.
Up to this point the Bruins penalty kill had been a perfect 7 for 7, no longer. In the first period, center David Krejci took a lamentable hooking penalty that led to a crafty goal by Ryan O'Reily off a redirect in front of the net. The Avs netted an empty netter in the closing seconds of the game, but the O'Reily's power play score was the difference in this one.
2) Tuukka solid again.
Once again Tuukka Rask looked very sharp. The Finn finished the game 28 for 29, and really stood no chance of stopping a skilled tip when the Bruins were shorthanded. Earlier in the game Rask stoned Avs top rookie Nathan Mackinnon on a cross-ice 2-on-1, robbing the number one overall pick of his first career goal.
3) The Powerplay goes cold.
Against the Red Wings, the unconventional Bruins powerplay (with Zdeno Chara in front of the net) went a surprising 2 for 4. The B's man advantage had no such luck against the Avalanche. The Bruins PP went a quiet 0-3 and were constatnly stymied by J.S. Giguere. No team in the league is capable of converting at a 50 % clip, but the Bruins should be striving for some level of consistency going forward.
