After practice on Tuesday, Boston Bruins head coach told reporters that center David Krejci had been named the teams road assistant captain. Krejci will wear the 'A' for road games while Chris Kelly will wear the letter for home games.
Even on a team with so much leadership, it should have come as no surprise that Krejci was the one to receive the honor in the wake of Andrew Ference's departure to Calgary via free-agency.
After some Krejci's name was floated in some trade rumors last season, the 27 year-old pivot went out and proved that he was capable of being this teams' number one center. Krejci has been with the Bruins and has played with the organization full-time since he was just 22.
His numbers may not stand out like a Crosby or a Malkin, but if you watched just one game of the Bruins playoff run last season, the talent is undeniable. Patrice Bergeron may be the teams' best overall player, and Zdeno Chara may be the most essential, but offensively there is nobody that matches Krejci's skill in the offensive zone.
More importantly, the anchor of the first line knows what it takes to win in crunch time. In the Bruins 2011 run to a Stanley Cup title, Krejci lead the team in scoring (12 G, 24 A), and were it not for the spectacular play of Tim Thomas, the Czech native would have the Conn Smythe sitting on his mantle.
Since then Krejci has developed into a leader that the organization can rely on both on and off the ice. Like many Eastern Europeans, Krejci stated out as a the soft-spoken type. Yet listening to the player talk to the press after wins and losses (especially in the playoffs), there is a fire behind his calm demeanor that reflects the attitude of the organization.
On the majority of other teams in the league Krejci would be lauded as franchise cornerstone, but in Boston, he is just another one of the guys. For a player who rises to the occasion when the games are on the line in June, that is probably just fine with him.
