On Thursday night the Boston Bruins got their first crack at the Detroit Red Wings, the newest member of the Eastern Conference. The Wings will also be a member of the new Atlantic Division. The game didn't count toward the regular season, but that doesn't mean it was pretty. The Bruins fell to Detroit 8-2 in their first appearance on home ice this season.
The B's skated with a half-squad, but the tilt did mark the first appearance of captain Zdeno Chara. Big z had no points and one penalty, but the game was a somewhat low key affair, with neither squad at full strength.
While Chara had a quiet night, defenseman Torey Krug added to his list of early season exploits. Krug, who is kindly listed at 5'8, took on a similar sized opponent in forward David McIntyre in a surprisingly spirited preseason bout.
Matt Bartowski, not wanting to go unnoticed provided an assists on yet another goal for Jarome Iginla. Bartkowski, along with Krug, should be the favorites for active roster spots heading into the regular season.
Speaking of Iginla, the tally marks his third in two games in the preseason. Tonight however, Iginla was able to produce without the help of his two traditional linemates' (Krejci and Lucic).
The only downer of the night was the Bruins goaltending situation, After not allowing a goal in his first NHL action, Malcolm Subban struggled mightily, letting in four goals in the third period.
The Bruins will travel to Detroit on Saturday for the second game of a home-and-home.
