It appears as though center Gregory Campbell could return for Thursday's preseason matchup with the Detroit Red Wings. Campbell is recovering from a broken leg that he suffered in last spring's Eastern Conference Finals versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Campbell was already ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation process, but B's head coach Claude Julien has said he that the fourth line center would need to be medically cleared by team doctors to return to the lineup.
On Wednesday, Campbell comeneted on his status.
“There’s no question I think I’m ready,” he said. “This is preseason and this is the point of preseason to prepare. No one is expecting me to go out there and be in Stanley Cup final shape, it’s more about getting my game back and feeling comfortable. The decision will be made by the coaching staff and the training staff.”
Now, it looks like that time has come. The Bruins stalwart penalty killer has repeatedly said he will comply with both the coaching staff and the team's medical staff, but after making it through multiple practices, believes that he's good to go.
"I think [Thursday’s] even a realistic possibility,” he said. “I talked to the surgeon the other day and things look good, so it’s a matter of what Claude has in store and what he wants to do with the lineup. As far as I’m concerned, I'm more than willing to play and I want to play. I want to test myself and see how I feel in a game situation."
Campbell's eagerness to return to the ice should come as no surprise to anyone, and if he is can somehow defy the odds and complete his remarkable recovery, the Bruins will be all that much better heading into the season opener.
