The Baltimore Ravens are winners of four in a row and in control of their own destiny in both the playoff race as well as the AFC North and enthusiasm is slowly returning to Charm City of a possible repeat. Last season this team was led in the playoffs by quarterback Joe Flacco with one of the best playoff runs in NFL history by a quarterback and this season he is saving his best for the second half of games.
Baltimore has struggled offensively this season as they have been unable to get much of a running game going and have essentially become one dimensional on offense. The passing game has had its ups and downs this season, but Flacco seems to do what he always does, perform well when the team needs it most.
The Ravens as a whole average 21.1 points per game, which ranks in the bottom third of the league, but a big reason for that low number is their miniscule 9.4 average points (4th worst in NFL) in the first half of games this season. For you math aficionados, the quick math tells you that they in turn average 11.7 points in the second half/overtime, which still isn't near the top of the league, but is much better than the first half.
A big reason for that is the improved performance of Flacco. Overall, Joe ranks 30th in the NFL in QBR at 76.5, but has been much better in the second half of games. He has not necessarily had to throw for multiple touchdowns in second halves to win games, but he has been able to manage the offense and not turn the football over.
His quarterback rating in the second half is much better, but more specifically in the fourth quarter as his QB rating is over 90 in the final fifteen minutes and has orchestrated back-to-back game winning drives in the fourth quarter over the last two games.
The fourth quarter has also been the most productive for the Ravens scoring wise as well, which shouldn't be a surprise with the vast improvement of Flacco's play. Baltimore averages 7.7 points per game in the fourth quarter, which is good for 7th in the entire league.
Baltimore fans should feel good that the Ravens have a quarterback that has proven time and time again that when the pressure hits, and the game is on the line in the second half, Flacco is going to find a way to lead his team to victory. In just his sixth year in the league, Joe has already orchestrated 19 game winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime.
That folks, is why he got the contract he did….he wins!
