Red Zone Offense Struggling Lately for Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have been known as one of the best red zone defenses in all of football over the past few seasons, but this year their red zone offense has struggled, especially as of late.

Baltimore used five Justin Tucker field goals to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 22-20 on Thanksgiving night, but what is not talked about as much is the fact that the Ravens only scored one touchdown despite getting into the red zone four times.

This has been a theme for the Ravens lately and overall this season. Baltimore ranks 24th in the NFL in red zone touchdown percentage this season scoring six on just 48.72% of their red zone chances.

That's not a very good number, and the Ravens 6-6 record would reflect that, but over their last three games it has gotten even worse. Baltimore has scored a touchdown on just 27.27% of their red zone chances over their last three games, which is the third worst in the entire league over that stretch. Oddly enough though, Baltimore has won two of those three games, but their defense has picked up the slack there.

Luckily, the Ravens have a very dependable kicker in Tucker, who has not missed a field goal since week two when he missed his only two attempts of the season. Tucker leads the entire NFL with 29 made field goals this season, and of course that is due to the Ravens inability to score touchdowns in the red zone as well his long range.

Most team's tend to settle for more field goals when on the road as opposed to home when in the red zone, but the Ravens have been vastly better on the road this season. Baltimore has scored a touchdown 57.89% of the time on the road when in the red zone as opposed to just 40% of the time at home.

Coming down the stretch, with the exception of this week's game against the Vikings, Baltimore is going to have to score touchdowns when in the red zone if they want to win against the high powered offenses of the Lions, Patriots and yes even the Bengals (12th in NFL in points per game).

Incase you were wondering, Baltimore was sixth in the NFL last season in red zone touchdown scoring percentage with a 60.32%.
