Despite reports that the Baltimore Ravens were actively trying to acquire a wide receiver to help bolster their struggling wide receiver core, the team remained quiet yesterday as the trade deadline came and went with no action in Charm City.
Baltimore was rumored to be interested in several different wide receivers across the league, which included the likes of Tennessee's Kenny Britt, New York's Hakeem Nicks, and Cleveland's Josh Gordon.
We predicted yesterday that the Ravens would not make a deal due to the salary cap complications of bringing on a guy who made a real salary, and their best option (Britt) was not really better than any of their current receivers. In addition, the looming return of TE Dennis Pitta is going to be a shot in the arm for this offense anyway and the need to have to give up more draft picks is not something the Ravens like to do.
Now that the trade deadline has passed, the Ravens roster is pretty much set and the team the way it is comprised now will need to make the necessary adjustments to the offense, defense and special teams.
Baltimore's biggest need for improvement is on the offensive line and the running game. The Ravens will need to figure out how to get the running game going as they rank in the bottom of the league in average rushing yards per game, and without an effective running game to bring more defenders into the box, the passing game will continue to struggle as well.
The Ravens trail the Cincinnati Bengals by two and a half games in the AFC North and is also on the outside looking in for the sixth and final playoff spot. The next two weeks are extremely important as the Ravens will take on the Cleveland Browns and Bengals in back to back weeks.
