It has been an out of the ordinary type of season thus far for the Baltimore Ravens in the John Harbaugh era as the team is under the .500 mark after seven games for the first time since he became head coach in 2008. Several reports have surfaced that Baltimore is attempting to acquire a wide receiver before today's 4:00 pm trade deadline.
This is not unchartered territory for the Ravens this year as they have been a team rumored to be trying to acquire a wide receiver, seeming all year, but with the trade deadline looming, this could be the last chance.
There are several big names out their that are rumored to be on the trade market at the wide receiver position, including such guys as Hakeem Nicks, Josh Gordon, and Kenny Britt, but would the Ravens make a move for any of them?
That, of course, is the question of the day, and although we do not have any confirmation of this, we anticipate no move will be made today due to all of the surrounding circumstances. Harbaugh was asked during his press conference yesterday if he anticipated a move before today's deadline and responded with:
“I wouldn’t comment on that anyway if I did,” Harbaugh said, “so it’s probably best just to stay away from that.”
Hakeem Nicks is obviously the biggest name on the list, but the Giants have stated over and over that they are not going to trade him. Largely due to the fact that they play in the NFC East where at 2-6, they are still just two games back of the division lead, thus their season is not over, so mark Nicks off the list.
Gordon is an interesting case as he is cheap, so there would be no salary cap worries there, but he is one failed drug test away from incurring a full year suspension from the NFL. Also, he plays on the Browns, and what would the chances be that Cleveland would want to trade a big playmaker inside their own division? Lastly, Gordon is only in his second year, thus is still very cheap and has proven that he is a playmaker, thus Cleveland's asking price is going to be very high to the point of a second round pick and a player as well, and it is hard to fathom Ozzie Newsome sending away such a high draft pick on a guy that could get suspended at the drop of a hat.
Britt seems to be the most logical acquisition in that his current team, the Titans, do not want him anymore, he is a decent wide receiver that make plays for you, and is inexpensive enough not to cause a salary cap headache. Keep in mind however, that Britt has had injury troubles in the past and his off the field conduct is very suspect. Baltimore should have learned their lesson with those types of players this offseason when they signed troubled LB Rolando McClain and he got arrested before even reporting to Baltimore. We look for the Ravens to stay away from Britt and his issues.
Ultimately, we do not believe Baltimore will make a deal today for a wide receiver because their answer is not really available. The two guys that would improve their wide receiving core are probably unobtainable and thus to make a move just to make a move does not fit the Newsome profile. Lastly, the Ravens could be on the brink of improving their pass catching ability in house as TE Dennis Pitta could be nearing a return in the not so distant future.
Sorry Ravens fans, do not expect a move for a receiver today, but hey, we have been wrong before, so who knows….
