Earlier this week the Baltimore Ravens signed veteran running back Bernard Scott to fill the empty roster spot that was vacated by the trade of LT Bryant McKinnie, but could this be a sign of TE Dennis Pitta’s return?
This season we have seen the Ravens sign and release and resign and release and resign TE Billy Bajema like it was a game of tag, but with an open roster spot, Baltimore elected not to resign him this time.
Bajema, when active, has not been very productive, but his ability to run block was something that neither Ed Dickson nor Dallas Clark was doing very well, so Bajema’s presence helped a little bit. This season he has caught two passes for a total of 18 yards.
This time, they passed on resigning Bajema and went with a third running back in Scott that will add some depth at the position and serve as insurance incase Ray Rice or Bernard Pierce were to go down with an injury.
We here at Ravens101 like to look below the surface, and we believe the signing of Scott as opposed to Bajema is a sign that Pitta is closer to returning than most people think. Pitta was placed on the Injury Rerseved with a designation to return list due to the dislocated hip he suffered early in training camp this summer.
Pitta was originally speculated to miss the entire season when he suffered the injury, but reports have stated that Pitta has been recovering well, and has been seen around the practice field catching balls from a Juggs machine. Many people believe that a Pitta return would be an unbelievably huge shot in the arm for the struggling Ravens offense, and we agree.
Only time will tell if passing on resigning Bajema and electing to go with a third running back was truly a sign that Pitta is close to returning, but it certainly does seem like it is the case.
