Joe Flacco led the Baltimore Ravens on a game tying touchdown drive with just under two minutes to go in the game, but the Pittsburgh Steelers drove down the field and used a Shaun Suisham 42 yard field goal as time expired for a 19-16 victory.
With the game tied, and 1:58 left in the game, Justin Tucker's unintentional squib kick was picked up in the endzone by Emmanuel Sanders on a risky return, but Sanders broke free for a 44 yard return to the Steelers 37 yard line to setup the game winning drive. Sanders actually ran it all the way to the endzone, but he barely stepped out of bounds to negate the touchdown.
Baltimore's defense played a terrifically most of the game, but could not get the stop when they needed it the most. Pittsburgh moved the ball fairly easily on the game winning drive, and moved into field goal range to set the stage for Suisham's game winner. Suisham was a perfect 4-4 on field goals yesterday and has not missed a field goal attempt all season.
"That's what we're supposed to do," Suisham said. "Hopefully we can start stacking wins here."
Flacco orchestrated a beautiful game tying drive prior to the game winner by the Steelers. The Ravens went 73 yards on 16 plays and the drive lasted 8:01. Flacco was 9-10 on the drive in pass attempts and hooked up with Dallas Clark on third and goal for a one yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 16.
Baltimore attempted a little trickery in the game as well. After they pulled to within four at 13-9, John Harbaugh decided it was time to try and make a statement as they attempted an onside kick. Unfortunately for Baltimore, they were called for two penalties on the play and they didn't recover the kick either. It gave Pittsburgh a short field and they ended up converting for a field goal to give them a 16-9 lead.
Flacco finished the game completing 24 of his 34 pass attempts for 215 yards and one touchdown, while Ray Rice was held to just 45 yards rushing on 15 carries. Baltimore again struggled in the running game totaling just 82 rushing yards on 26 carries and a 3.2 yards per carry average.
The Ravens will now head into their bye week at 3-4 this season and it is the first time Baltimore has been under .500 this deep into the season since 2005 when they were also 3-4. Baltimore will have to work on a number of things during their bye week, including finding some form of a running game.
Baltimore knows it is in unfamiliar territory:
"We can't kid ourselves anymore, we've got a lot of work to do," Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs said. "We're used to things going a little different for us, but that being said we've got to be able to adjust on the fly and play football."
"I still have a lot of confidence," Flacco said. "It's going to be a dog fight just like it always is in this division … We still have a lot of games to go."
There are nine games remaining in the regular season, but with the Cincinnati Bengals victorious yesterday, Baltimore now finds themselves two games back in the division.
