Earlier today we recapped the disappointing loss the Baltimore Ravens were handed courtesy of the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday, but the Steelers did something out of the ordinary to beat the Ravens, run the football.
The Steelers came into yesterday's game with the second worst average in the NFL for rushing yard per game at 61 yards per, but utilized a strong effort from rookie running back Le'Veon Bell to rack up 141 total rushing yards in the game.
Those of you who are quick with your math, that's more than double their season average coming into the game and it was a huge factor for the Steelers in their win.
Bell outran the average himself, as he carried the ball 19 times for 93 yards on the ground and although he did not get into the endzone, his play may have been to most important of any player in the victory.
Baltimore came into the game allowing an average of 98.2 rushing yards per game, which was good for 9th fewest in the league, so it appeared that this was going to be an advantage for the Ravens coming in. As the old adage goes, "that's why they play the games."
Total rushing yards can sometimes be misconstrued for success in the running game, but that was not the case for the Steelers yesterday. Pittsburgh averaged 4.9 yards per carry in the game, and if you do not think that is a good average, you are sorry to say, crazy. Anytime a team can run the ball for that high of an average per carry, it is going to be a long day and in the end it was for Baltimore.
When we gave our five key matchups to watch, we stated that whichever team's running game found a way to breakthrough, that team was going to win, and low and behold, it turned out that way.
