Jacoby Jones was going to be depended on much more in the passing game coming into the this season, especially with the departure of Anquan Boldin and the injury to Dennis Pitta, but after suffering an injury to his MCL in the opening game of the regular season, the Baltimore Ravens had to wait to see how much of a difference maker he could be.
Sunday, Jones made his return to the field, and he instantly made a good impression in the passing game. Jones caught two balls for 42 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens 19-17 loss to the Packers on Sunday.
OK, so they are not eye popping numbers, but you have to look deeper to see the impact he truly made. Jones instantly adds a second deep threat in the passing game, along with Torrey Smith, which in turn opens up the intermediate routes. Dallas Clark and Tandon Doss each had nice days for the Ravens and if you watched carefully, you would have noticed both Clark and Doss accrued most of their yards on intermediate routes that they turned into big gains because of the space they had available to run after the catch.
Oh by the way, Jones is pretty good in the return game as well. We wondered just how much Jones would be involved in the kick return game when he came back from the injury, and although he was only back to return one punt, he was the kickoff returner and performed very well.
Jacoby, who was a Pro Bowl selection last season as a kick returner, got four opportunities on Sunday and totaled 102 return yards for an average of 25.5 yards per return which drastically helped with field position for the Ravens offense.
As Jones gets even more healthy, his role in the return game may increase even more, but his presence at the wide receiver position does help open up those intermediate routes, which could help Baltimore tight ends and slot receivers pick up important yards over the middle. The Ravens offense is still a work in progress, but Jones being on the field does nothing but help.
