It's Thursday, and that means it's time for Ravens101's AFC North Thursday as we recap the previous week in the division as well as look ahead to the coming week. Week five resulted in an undefeated week for the division as all three active teams were victorious, while the Pittsburgh Steelers had a bye week.
As is always the case, we will start with our Baltimore Ravens and they earned a tough, hard fought road victory in week five against the Miami Dolphins. Baltimore fans flocked to to Miami to paint the stadium purple, and the team did not disappoint them as Justin Tucker nailed the go ahead 44 yard field goal with just under two minutes remaining in the game.
The Ravens used six sacks in the game, including a crucial sack from Elvis Dumervil forcing the Dolphins to attempt a 57 yard game tying field goal, which they missed with less than a minute in the game to secure the victory for Baltimore. Terrell Suggs had three sacks in the game pushing his season total to seven through the first five games, while Joe Flacco threw for 269 yards and one interception. Ray Rice carried the ball 27 times in the game and although he accrued just 74 yards, he did punch it in the endzone twice in the game.
Elsewhere in the division, the surging Cleveland Browns pushed their winning streak to three as they took down the team that beat the Ravens the week before in the Buffalo Bills. Cleveland's 37-24 victory was highlighted by a 17 point second quarter and a 13-0 fourth quarter, when the game was tied at 24 entering the fourth quarterback. The big headline in this game was that both team's lost their starting quarterback due to injuries as Buffalo lost E.J. Manuel and the Browns lost Brian Hoyer for the season due to a ACL injury, thus implanting Brandon Weeden back into the line of fire. Weeden played well as he completed 13 of 24 pass attempts for 197 yards and a touchdown.
The Cincinnati Bengals used a dominant defensive performance to pull out a 13-6 victory over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots in terrible weather. The Bengals used a solid run game that put up 162 total rushing yards with the lone touchdown in the game. Cincinnati's defense was the star of the show as they held New England to just 248 total yards of offense and ended Tom Brady's streak of 52 consecutive games with a passing touchdown as well.
As we mentioned earlier, the Steelers were on a bye week following their game in London in week four, but still lost a half game in the standings to every team in the division and find themselves 2 1/2 games back of the three way tie atop the division.
It should be an interesting week in the division as all four teams have tough games on the schedule for week six:
- Ravens (3-2) vs Packers (2-2) Sunday 1pm
- Steelers (0-4) at Jets (3-2) Sunday 1pm
- Bengals (3-2) at Bills (2-3) Sunday 1pm
- Browns (3-2) vs Lions (3-2) Sunday 1pm
