Terrell Suggs is among the league leaders in sacks and is playing like he did in 2011 when he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year. One thing is for certain, Suggs is benefiting greatly from having Elvis Dumervil on the other side of this Baltimore Ravens defense.
Last season, and it was obvious, Suggs was not 100% as he was recovering from the torn ACL he suffered, but his play was disappointing, and he would tell you that himself. In 2012, Suggs had just two sacks and 23 tackles in eight games. This season has been quite a turnaround for the All Pro as he leads the Ravens with seven sacks and is second on the team with 36 tackles.
So what changed?
Well for one, and we sort of touched on it already, he is now completely healthy and his speed burst when the ball is snapped is easily visible. Secondly, he now has a legitimate pass rushing counterpart on the other side of the defense in Dumervil.
Some of you may be saying to yourselves, "Paul Kruger wasn't legitimate?" We look at it this way, Suggs made Kruger a pass rush threat and if you look at last season, Kruger did not start getting to the quarterback until Suggs returned to the Ravens lineup.
Having Dumervil on the other side of the defense now makes opposing offenses account for both Ravens outside linebackers and that is causing havoc for anyone playing against the Ravens. Suggs has at least one sack in every game Baltimore has played this season and after yesterday's three sack performance, he now has seven this season and ranks fourth in the NFL.
It's a combination of Suggs being completely healthy and having Dumervil on the other side that is setting the stage for a possible second NFL Defensive Player of the Year award for Terrell, but the entire defense is benefiting as well. Baltimore has 19 sacks in their first five games thus far and that is the second highest total in the NFL (Chiefs 21) and nine players have at least a half sack for the Ravens. Baltimore is on pace to destroy their sack total of 37 that they put up in 2012 as their current pace would total over 57 sacks.
We all knew the Ravens pass rush was going to be better this season when they made the moves to bring in guys such as Dumervil, Chris Canty and Marcus Spears, but did you expect it to be this good? Let us know your thoughts by posting a comment!
