The Baltimore Ravens acquired the talented left tackle Eugene Monroe from the Jacksonville Jaguars with two third day draft picks in the 2014 NFL Draft, and immediately the thought of 'what happens to Bryant McKinnie?' came to mind. Today, McKinnie stated he would be open to being traded.
McKinnie admitted that he was surprised by the trade, but did say he was informed of the deal before it was announced nationally.
“Yeah, I’m kind of surprised,” he said. “This is business, so they’re going to do whatever is best for their business.”
Of course the immediate thought would be that McKinnie would simply become the backup to Monroe, but Bryant doesn't seem to be willing to submit to that thought process. He was asked if he would want to stay in Baltimore if he became a back up and responded with:
“We’ll have to see when the time comes,” McKinnie said. “Maybe a trade. Who knows?”
His thought process did not change whatsoever from when he first heard the news as he was asked whether he would have to adjust to being a backup again.
“Who said that’s what I have to adjust to?” McKinnie said. “Maybe not, so we don’t know yet.”
Despite any assumptions, McKinnie did say today that he has not been told by the coaching staff that he has lost his starting job, and odds are that is because Monroe will not be familiar enough with the Ravens offense by this Sunday, so McKinnie is likely to start this week.
McKinnie said he has gotten better every game this season, and that is somewhat true as he did have his best performance of the season against Buffalo, but his run blocking has been an issue all season.
