The Baltimore Ravens have continued to try and address their issue at returner, with the loss of Jacoby Jones, this week as they announced yesterday the signing of RB/KR Shaun Draughn, not long after resigning WR Tandon Doss who can also help in the return game. To make room for Draughn on the 53-man roster, the Ravens placed WR Aaron Mellette on IR.
The third year running back is not a stranger to being a special teams player as the former Kansas City Chiefs running back had essentially the same role last season.
“I’m happy to be part of this organization,” Draughn said. “It’s basically the same role I had last year with Kansas City.”
Draughn will likely be the kick returner as well as the team's number three running back, which was the same role he played in Kansas City last season where he had 23 kick returns for an average of 23.3 yards, and also had 59 rushing attempts for 233 yards and two touchdowns.
Jones, although Head Coach John Harbaugh called his status "day-to-day, week-to-week," is reportedly out four to six weeks, so Draughn could help fill the void left by Jacoby in the return game. It will be a better option than throwing the team's number two running back Bernard Pierce out there like the Ravens were forced to do in Denver when Jones went down with his sprained MCL.
“He’s been a good special teams player, he’s been a good returner, and he’s been a good running back," Harbaugh said. "He played against us last year for Kansas City and he played very well. He’s a good young player and we’re excited to be fortunate to have him.”
In order to make room for Draughn on the roster, the Ravens placed the rookie Mellette on IR with a knee injury. Mellette was a late scratch for the Ravens season opener after a very impressive preseason that saw him catch nine passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason. He will now spend the rest of the year on IR and look to become an impact player when he returns in 2014.
With Mellette on IR, the Ravens now only have four healthy wide receivers in Torrey Smith, Marlon Brown, Brandon Stokley and Tandon Doss, with Deonte Thompson still nursing a foot injury. Although Thompson hopes to return soon, it is unclear what kind of time table he has.
