All of the attention was on the decision by the Ravens to release All Pro fullback Vonta Leach yesterday, which saved them $3 million against the salary cap. Although the release of Leach was getting most of the attention, Baltimore took to the field for day one of mandatory mini-camp yesterday.
The Pro Bowl guard was not practicing or on the field yesterday for the Ravens and is likely because he is rehabbing from an injury he suffered last season. Yanda did get to attend the celebrations last week with the ring ceremony and the White House visit.
Being healthy sure makes a difference for Suggs, as he practiced with his teammates for the first time since hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Suggs was noticeably lighter than he was last season as he struggled with injuries that kept him from working out. A lighter Suggs will hope to return to his 2011 form this season for Baltimore.
We could not get through news and notes on day one without at least examining what the release of Leach does for the Ravens offense. Fourth round draft selection Kyle Juszczyk will now be the starting fullback for the Ravens and although his blocking skills are not up to par with Leach, he brings a mutlitude of options for Offensive Coordinator Jim Caldwell with his ability to both run and catch the football.
The newly signed inside linebacker was on the practice field for the first time in a Ravens uniform and looked great. He showed no lingering effects of the sports hernia surgery that only allowed him to play two games last season. Smith made himself at home as he would call signals for the defense and was picking up on the Baltimore system very quickly.
Did not practice list
Here is the list of Ravens that did not take part in practice due to injuries: nose guard Terrence Cody (hip surgery), wide receiver Marlon Brown (ACL), defensive lineman Kapron Lewis-Moore (ACL), cornerback Lardarius Webb (ACL) and offensive guard Antoine McClain (foot surgery).
Day two will undoubtedly bring us some more storylines to write about, and that is a good thing as we are all getting a little taste of Ravens football.
