Sometimes fans, and us included could have the tendency to overreact to something the front office of our favorite team does, in the Baltimore Orioles case, fans, not us (this time) quickly gained anger as they heard the team had optioned starter Wei-Yin Chen to the Gulf Coast League, but what was being missed, at least at first was that the O's are just really good at paper work.
After the game, the team also optioned Kevin Gausman to the Gulf Coast League.
The Orioles recalled C Steve Clevenger to take Chen's spot as Clevenger gives the team another left handed bat off the bench and allows some wiggle room if Manager Buck Showalter wants to pinch hit for one of his catchers late in the game as Clevenger provides a third player option behind the plate.
Baltimore will make a corresponding move today to replace Gausman, with the odds being placed on a reliever being called up as T.J. McFarland threw three innings in last night's game, so is likely unavailable for a couple days.
Fans began to freak out a bit when the news broke about Chen, but what was missed, again, at first, was the fact that the team optioned both Chen and Gausman to the Gulf Coast League, which will see their season end before August 31, and the rules state that if an affiliate's season ends prior to the 10-day required stay in the minor leagues after being optioned is over, then the player is eligible to return once that affiliate's season ends.
Thus Chen would be eligible to return for his next scheduled start which is on Sunday, August 31.
Guess what, Gausman also, is eligible to return for his next scheduled, which is the next day, Monday, September 1.
While both are eligible to return for their next scheduled start, it is possible both could be moved back a day to allow Ubaldo Jimenez to start on Sunday as he has a phenomenal track record against the Minnesota Twins throughout his career, including a 10 strikeout game earlier this season.
Sometimes on the surface, especially right away, a move may not make any sense, but this is the ultimate paper work move and allows the Orioles to be flexible over the next few days with their roster to help fill any voids they may believe they have.
