It's time for another edition of Orioles101's Baltimore Orioles Minor League spotlight and today we focus on the Orioles organizational players of the month for July as the Delmarva Shorebirds sweep the month with LHP Luis Gonzalez being named Pitcher of the Month and INF Drew Dosch named Player of the Month.
The Low-A Shorebirds have dominated the Orioles organizational players of the month awards this season, and July was no different as they became the first Orioles affiliate to sweep both awards more than once this season.
Dosch, who was a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All Star selection, has continued his fine 2014 campaign and he was a man on fire in the month of July. Dosch hit .364 with one home run and 15 RBI in the month to continue his phenomenal second half. Since the SAL All Star Game, Dosch has hit .362 with one home run, six doubles, 19 RBI and 63 hits in 43 games.
Overall this season, Dosch has been one of the top performers in the entire SAL as he is hitting .329 with four home runs, 17 doubles, 46 RBI and boasts an on base percentage of .395 with an OPS of .806.
Gonzalez, who may be one of the biggest surprises in the Orioles organization this season, has continued a great 2014, his second season in the Orioles organization. He was originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2010 as a non-drafted free agent. Gonzalez put up a fantastic July as he went 4-0 with a 1.65 ERA in five starts for the month.
Overall in 2014, Gonzalez has been solid all season and boasts a 6-1 record with a 2.84 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) and has struck out 62 batters compared to walking just 22 in 66 2/3 innings. Opponents are batting just .212 against him and he has yet to allow a single home run this entire season!
Congratulations to Drew and Luis for being named the Orioles players of the month for July and if you get a chance to catch the Shorebirds in action this season, we strongly encourage you to do so as there is some great talent to take in.
