It's Sunday, and that means it's time for another edition of Orioles101 Mailbag and this week the focus was on the 2014 MLB All Star Game and which Baltimore Orioles will be represented in Minnesota, while some other odds and ends questions were presented.
As we always do, we want to remind you that if we receive multiple questions on the same topic, we answer them with one general answer as opposed to answering each one and repeating ourselves.
Which Orioles players will be named to the All Star Team?
The rosters are set to be announced tonight and we believe that both Nelson Cruz and Adam Jones will be named starters for the American League as Jones made a large push for the final starting outfield spot in fan voting this week and Cruz has been a leader in the DH category for a while and we see no reason why it would change, but stranger things have happened before.
As far as reserves go, Nick Markakis and JJ Hardy have a shot at being named by Boston Red Sox Manager John Farrell, who is the American League Manager for this year's All Star game, but neither are certain. Bud Norris has an outside shot at being named, but we would be a little surprised if he was simply because his win-loss record is not up there among the league leaders. Lastly, we would be pretty darn surprised if Zach Britton does not make the squad, especially if you look at the fact that the Toronto Blue Jays sent two relievers to the All Star Game last season that were not closers. Britton did not take over the closer's role till May, but he has been outstanding all season. If he is not named to the team by Farrell, we would anticipate he would show up on the fan vote ballot for the final roster spot.
Will the Orioles be active in the trade market this July?
If by simply being active you mean making at least one trade, then yes. Dan Duquette has proven that he will make a move or two when the team is in the race, which it is firmly in the race right now, but we would be a little surprised if the Orioles make a move to acquire one of the bigger names that will find themselves on the market. We would look for the team to possibly add a left handed bat and a reliever.
Will any of the big name Minor Leaguers be promoted for the second half of the season?
While the only people that can answer this for certain are those in the organization, we would be surprised if a number of the "bigger" names were not promoted. We look for Hunter Harvey to make the move to Frederick at some point, while a pair of Bowie Baysox in Christian Walker and Dariel Alvarez are likely to get the call to AAA Norfolk at some point as well.
As always, we thank everyone for their questions throughout the week, and we continue to urge you to send us questions every week as Orioles101 Mailbag is here to stay as a weekly edition.
