It's time for another edition of Orioles101 Baltimore Orioles Minor League Spotlight and today we turn our focus to the short-season A Aberdeen Ironbirds and catcher Alex Murphy, who is off to a hot start.

Murphy was a sixth round selection (189th overall) of the Orioles in the 2013 MLB Draft, and is a local product out of Calvert Hall.

He got some time last year after signing with the Orioles with their Gulf Coast League affiliate and played in 31 games. He hit .231 with one home run, nine RBI, seven doubles, and had a .330 on base percentage in 91 at bats.

This season, he has seen a little time with the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds and accrued just 15 at bats in four games and had three hits, including a double and one RBI.

The plan all along was to have Murphy play with the Ironbirds and once their season got close, Murphy was transferred to their roster and he has gotten off to a tremendous start.

Murphy has proved to be a good hitter early on as he has posted a .327 batting average with two home runs, six RBI, two doubles and has a .362 on base percentage in 14 games and 52 at bats entering Friday's game.

On Thursday, Murphy saw his nine game hit streak get snapped after going 0-4, but was 14-35 (.400) with both his home runs, all six of his RBI and one of his doubles during the streak.

He still has some work to do with his approach at the plate, but has already made tremendous strides in his short time in the Orioles organization. Murphy was one of the gluttony of catchers drafted in 2013 and Baltimore hopes that Murphy can be one of the standouts at the position for years to come and eventually get to the big league club, especially with the uncertainty at the position in the future with Matt Wieters entering free agency after the 2015 season and time has yet to tell whether or not Caleb Joseph or Steve Clevenger will be the future at the position.

Last offseason we sat down with Murphy for an interview and you can click here to check it out.
