During the course of the 2014 season, we will be dishing out some Orioles101 Minor League spotlights for the Baltimore Orioles affiliates and if you have noticed, thus far it has been pretty heavy on the AA Bowie Baysox as their offense has been phenomenal this season, but not to be overlooked, the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds pitching staff has been shutting opposing teams down with regularity thus far in 2014.

The Shorebirds pitching staff leads all Orioles Minor League affiliates in practically every pitching category that is considered a good one to lead in, which includes ERA, hits allowed, shutouts, saves, home runs allowed, and walks.

Delmarva is currently 24-21 on the season and sit in second place of the South Atlantic League's Northern Division. The Shorebirds boast a team ERA of 2.93 in 390 1/3 innings pitched, they have tossed five shutouts and own a miniscule 1.21 team WHIP. Those are absolutely phenomenal numbers for a pitching staff, so how do they stack up against the rest of the South Atlantic League?

The Shorebirds lead the league with their 1.21 WHIP, are tied for first with their five shutouts and 15 saves. Delmarva is second with their 2.93 ERA, while their 126 walks allowed are the second fewest as well as their 127 earned runs allowed are the second fewest. Incase you are wondering, the South Atlantic League has 14 teams in it.

As you would expect, their are several Shorebirds pitchers among the league leaders in several categories, including 2013 first round pick Hunter Harvey, who is one of ten pitchers in the league with a sub 2.00 ERA. Harvey is also fifth in the league with his 0.98 WHIP and is tied for the league lead with 50 strikeouts.

Sebastian Vader, who boasts a 3.16 ERA, is tied for second in the league with six wins, while Dylan Rheault is tied for fourth with five wins. Rheault also boasts a sub 2.00 ERA with his 1.83 and he has yet to lose a game as he is 5-0 with two saves in his nine relief appearances this season.

Another arm making a big impression is Steven Brault who is 4-2 with a 2.35 ERA in eight starts and has yet to allow a home run in 46 innings pitched and has a miniscule 1.02 WHIP.

Lastly, the Shorebirds also have to most dominant closer in the entire league as Jimmy Yacobonis leads the league with 10 saves in 14 games pitched. Yacobonis is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and has 20 strikeouts with a 1.07 WHIP.

It is easy to see that the Shorebirds have one of, if not the best pitching staff in the entire South Atlantic League, which is promising for the future of the Orioles organization. Delmarva is certainly making a statement that this organization is heading in the right direction on the mound, just ask any team that has faced them.
