The last few days have been a little odd as the Baltimore Orioles had yet to announce their starting pitchers for Wednesday and Thursday despite the fact that it was Wei-Yin Chen and Miguel Gonzalez's turns in the rotation and now we know why, to an extent. The Orioles announced that Kevin Gausman will start Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers.
The announcement was a bit of a surprise as Gausman started this past Saturday for the AAA Norfolk Tides, which puts him on short rest Wednesday. Gausman tossed a season high 77 pitches in 4 2/3 scoreless innings on Saturday and allowed two hits, three walks and struck out six.
Further surprising is the fact that Gausman's start on Saturday was his first since returning from the disabled list after he battled with pneumonia.
Gausman has been on a pitch limit thus far in Norfolk, and as we mentioned earlier, his 77 pitches this past Saturday was a season high, so it is unknown just how many the Orioles will allow him to throw against the Tigers. So far this season with the Tides, Gausman started six games and compiled an 0-1 record with a 2.08 ERA in 26 innings of work. He has allowed seven runs (six earned), 23 hits, 14 walks and has struck out 26 in his six starts.
In 2013, Gausman made his Major League debut with the Birds and went 3-5 with a 5.66 ERA in 20 appearances (five starts) and allowed eight home runs and struck out 49 in 47 2/3 innings of work.
He did get a start against the Tigers in 2013 and was good as he allowed just one run on five hits in six innings.
It's tough to see the Orioles letting Gausman get too high with the pitch count, especially since he hasn't been stretched out very far thus far this season in an effort to conserve his innings so he could be available for the stretch run.
It won't be easy for Gausman on Wednesday as he will square off against Justin Verlander and a potent Tigers lineup.
