The Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates have been rained out twice over the last two days and their short two game series has turned into a three day affair with both games being played today in a single admission double header. Not only will the Orioles play two games today, but they will also have to make two roster moves as well.

Baltimore already made a roster move on Tuesday when they re-signed 1B/OF Steve Pearce who they had designated for assignment just a week earlier, but with Chris Davis going down to an oblique strain, all of the sudden Pearce was a hot commodity for the Orioles. Pearce reportedly declined a claim by the Toronto Blue Jays and elected free agency so he could re-sign with the Orioles and by not activating Manny Machado right away, the O's were able to add Pearce to the active 25-man roster to fill Davis' roster spot.

Today will be quite the eventful day around the Yard as the Orioles and Pirates will play two games with the first one scheduled to start at 4:05. The O's will have to make two roster moves today, but not all at once as one will have to be made between games.

Left handed pitcher Troy Patton, who began the season serving a 25-game suspension for testing positive for Aderol. The Birds 25th game will be the first game of today's double header, thus the team will have to activate Patton after the first game and in turn also have to make room for him. From what we are being told by sources, Josh Stinson is the likely candidate to lose his roster spot in favor of Patton. This should come as no surprise as Stinson has been the least effective reliever in the Orioles bullpen as he boasts a 7.15 ERA in 11 1/3 innings pitched this season.

Now, there is an outside chance that the team could elect to option one of their abundant supply of second basemen and go with eight relievers in the bullpen, but with Manny Machado returning from the DL, you would think that Machado is not going to play third base every day to start out, so the extra bench player is probably much more valuable than keeping Stinson in the pen.

Of course, the other roster move that Baltimore will have to perform today is the activation of the Platinum Glove winner. Machado will be activated at some point today and the Orioles will have to decide who to send down to make room for Manny. Many people are expecting either Steve Lombardozzi or Jonathan Schoop to be optioned, but we completely disagree. We expect recently recalled second baseman Jemile Weeks to get sent back down to AAA, but do not count out the possibility that Ryan Flaherty could get optioned as well as he continues to struggle at the plate as he is currently hitting .188. Odds are, Weeks is the likely guy to be on the bus back to Norfolk.

It will be an active day around the O's after three consecutive days without baseball, and we will keep you updated on all things happening with the Birds today.
