Duquette stated at FanFest that the team had offered Davis a contract extension this winter, but that "“it really hasn’t progressed.”
Hearing that the team has at least done this is good news to fans' ears as many have hoped that the team has yet to spend any real money on free agents this offseason in order to offer contract extensions to its' current players who will be free agents over the next two years.
The real question is how serious of an offer it really was, and we feel it must have been pretty darn low because Davis commented at FanFest that he had not been made aware of any contract extension talks, and if his agent, Scott Boras, did not even inform Davis of the offer, how serious of one could it be? Here is what Davis said when asked about the contract extension talks:
“Really, did he say anything else?” Davis asked, and was told no. “Dang. Let me get up to speed on that.”
The fact that Davis did not even know about the offer is pretty dismal news. The fan base has fallen in love with Crush, and he has presumably equally fallen in love with Baltimore.
“I’ve said it before. I’ll say it every day. I love being in Baltimore. This is a place that really has felt like a second home to me,” Davis said. “I would love to stay here.”
Hopefully the Orioles realize this and will be willing to spend the money that it will take to keep Davis in Charm City, but of course, they will probably put the contract extension talks on hold till after this season to see if he can repeat, or at least come close to his performance last season, before they are willing to present him with a real offer. The downside is, if they do wait, and he does repeat his 2013 performance, his price tag will sky rocket.
