Today we take a step back from the borderline disaster that was the Winter Meetings for the Baltimore Orioles to talk about something that is prevalent this time of year, helping the community. The Orioles have several events going on this holiday season, including one today and on Monday.

Per an Orioles press release, the organization continues with their partnership with the American Heart Association as they will co-host a Healthy Lifestyle youth clinic today. The clinic will be for 400 Baltimore City Recreation Center youth today from 2:00 pm to 4:45 pm at the William Myers Recreation Center, located at 4300 West Bay Avenue in Brooklyn, Maryland.

Baltimore's strength and conditioning coach Joe Hogarty will be in attendance co-hosting with the Oriole Bird, as the youth will rotate between four stations and receive instruction on baseball skills, stationary calisthenics, mobile drills and nutrition. Also in attendance will be former Orioles outfielder Al Bumbry as an additional instructor.

The clinic is a part of Recess Baltimore, an eight-month after school program designed to empower children ages five through 14 in Baltimore to make healthy behavior changes and become leaders and advocates for healthy eating and physical activity.

The Orioles effort to help out in the community does not stop there as they will also be hosting their 35th Annual Orioles Reach Holiday Part for Kids on Monday, December 16. Both current and former Orioles will host 80 kindergarten through fifth grade students from Alexander Hamilton Elementary School in Baltimore from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at Dave & Busters in the Arundel Mills Mall.

Current Orioles Nick Markakis, Steve Johnson and Steve Clevenger will be joined by former O's Al Bumbry and Dave Johnson for the event. MASN broadcaster Jim Hunter will serve as emcee for the event.

This is a great event and the players will serve lunch, play games with and sign autographs for the students. MASN's Tom Davis will play Santa Claus and deliver gifts donated by the Orioles to each child. Students will play for free in the arcade room courtesy of Dave and Busters.

Students were selected to attend based on standards set by the school including perfect attendance or those who have met their Blue Ribbon attendance goal of at least 96% attendance. Each child was also required to be an Eagle Code Superstar or Star. This year's event marks the 35th year the Orioles have held a holiday party for children from economically disadvantaged areas in Baltimore. A different school is selected each year.

Markakis will not only be in attendance, but her his wife Christina made a financial contribution for the party and will provide a new baseball glove for each child.

It is always great to see any celebrity or sports team take the time during the holiday season, or anytime of the year to give back to the community that supports them and the next four days are just the latest example of the Orioles giving back.
