The Baltimore Orioles have been quiet on the official signing front at the MLB Winter Meetings, although they have been involved in several "rumors," but today we expect the Orioles to finally make a move. Do not get too excited O's fans, the Rule 5 Draft starts at 9am this morning and Baltimore is likely to select a player.

We are already anticipating the slew of comments from our followers on Twitter and Facebook once the Rule 5 Draft is complete and the Orioles have selected someone, likely another reliever that they will have to hide on the active roster, just like they did last year with T.J. McFarland.

Two years ago the Orioles selected Ryan Flaherty in the Rule 5 Draft and he was easier to keep on the roster due to injuries to guys like Brian Roberts and Nolan Reimold as Flaherty could play multiple positions.

Executive VP/GM Dan Duquette and his scouting staff have deemed it necessary to take a player in the Rule 5 Draft, but the issue is the inability to send them down to the minors if they are inefficient on the field. When a team selects a player in the Rule 5 Draft that is at a certain level, the selecting team must keep the player on the active 25-man roster the entire season or offer him back to the team they drafted him from.

Again we expect the Orioles to select someone today, but most Orioles fans do not care and want to see the team actually sign or acquire a player that immediately makes them better and fills in one of the holes on the current roster. Outside of the closer position, the bullpen is actually one of our least concerns about the team as it is constructed right now.

On the flip side, it will be interesting to see if a team selects Orioles minor league catcher Caleb Joseph, who has a monster year for the AA Bowie Baysox and is eligible to be selected in today's Rule 5 Draft. He was not added to the 40-man roster prior to the deadline earlier this month and now we have to just sit back and wait to see if he is selected or gets to remain in the Orioles organization.
