Just as we predicted, the Baltimore Orioles finally made a move today at the Winter Meetings, and again it was not a free agent signing or trade most Orioles fans are desperate to see, but the Birds selected 3B Michael Almanzar in the Rule 5 Draft.

Almanzar is out of the Boston Red Sox organization and has primarily played third base in the minor leagues, but has also played first base. He just turned 23 years old last week and he played with the Red Sox AA Portland team in 2013 and posted a .268 average with 16 home runs, 29 doubles, 81 RBI and a .328 on base percentage.

Michael has six career minor league seasons under his belt and has posted a career batting average of .250 with 49 home runs, 304 RBI, 135 doubles, and a .302 on base percentage.

Almanzar will now have to stay on the Orioles active 25-man roster all season, or will have to be offered back to Boston. Obviously he would just be a right handed bench bat or could serve as insurance incase Manny Machado is not ready to start the season.

In the Minor League portion of the Rule 5 Draft, the Orioles selected Julio Borbon in the AAA portion. If that name sounds familiar, it should to some extent as he actually played in the 2010 World Series with the Texas Rangers. Baltimore selected him out of the Chicago Cubs organization today.

Borbon, who will be 28 when the season starts, is a career .304 hitter in the minor leagues with 19 homers, 83 doubles, 165 RBI, 122 stolen bases and a .357 on base percentage. He also comes with some Major League experience as he has played in 288 career games in the big leagues and has posted a .272 average with eight homers, 19 doubles, 76 RBI, 47 stolen bases and a .318 on base percentage.

Unlike Almanzar, Borbon does not have to be placed on active 25-man roster since he was selected in the Minor League portion of the draft as that rule does not apply.

Baltimore did not lose a single player in any phase of the Rule 5 Draft.
